Thanks for all the input about how many of you have handled interference
problems similar to mine. A few common denominators I'd like to summarize
that mentioned are:

1- Try to locate the noise source as best possible before contacting the
utility company. Use VHF AM receivers and directional antennas for more
accurate noise hunting vs. HF AM broadcast receivers. Use binoculars and
visually investigate the candidate poles at night for signs of arcing. A
report of arcing will attract the attention of the power company more
quickly than "I have static in my amateur receiver".

2- Don't knock on poles with big hammers/malls as I did (although it did
work!).

3- When investigating the noise, obtain any additional input available from
your neighbors. Specifically info on interference to their TV's, stereo's,
AM/FM broadcast receivers, etc. The power company may be more interested in
your findings if there are several households affected.

4- Document all findings, communications with the power company, etc. Record
dates and times of peak interference. Record on audio tape with a short
narrative, the sounds of interference to your equipment.

5- Be patient and as professional as possible in your communications with
the power company. Offer your assistance. Give them ample time to adress the
problem. It may take more than one visit from them.

6- Be persistant. If the utility company won't adress your problem in a
reasonable period of time, let then know of your intentions to contact the
utilities commission and FCC. Follow through with your intentions, and copy
them on any correspondance on the subject.

Hopefully, that will lead to corrective action. A few people mentioned other
possible methods of getting action as well (maybe not the action you
desire!). These methods were: (and only mentioned in jest!)

1- Do you have a rifle?
2- Do you have a tractor?
3- Do you have bolt cutters (for the pole guy cables)?

The last 3 methods were amusing and reminded me of growing up in Johnston
County :-)

Thanks for all the input!
