This was the first day I could copy VK0IR fairly well on 160m.
I started hearing him here (QTH just southwest of Cleveland Ohio)
about 2245Z on my SE Beverage. He was loudest between 2300Z and
2315Z when he frequently was an honest 539 on the SE beverage. I
tried the NE beverage but he was quite a bit weaker. I was pleased and
delighted to work him at 2304Z. At 2320Z he started to fade but
suprisingly started to get stronger again around 2330Z. However now
he was louder on the NE beverage. I was able to copy him till about
2350 when he faded out completely. I use two 500' 2-wire Beverages.
One pair runs NE/SW, the other NW/SE.
Incidentally he also had a very good signal on 80m ssb. I started
hearing him at 2200Z on the SE Beverage. He peaked at around 2330 with
a good 57 signal on both the SE Beverage and the SE position on the
80m 4-Square. I could still hear him faintly on the SE Beverage at
0030Z. By 0040Z he was gone.
What a great low band opening to VK0IR. I am still excited about it.
