Recall the coronal mass ejection of 07/0230Z? It was predicted to come
by here around the 11th.
Well, the USAF/NOAA Report of Solar-Geophysical Activity issued at 2200Z
on 10 February said that "solar wind data indicated a magnetic cloud
passed the L1 position near 09/1230Z". The Report went on to say "brief
minor and major storm periods are possible during that time (of passage)
as the magnetic cloud completes its transit past the earth".
So, the USAF/NOAA forecasters had the CME right; now the question is the
magnitude of the disturbance it creates. Stay tooned.
By the way, or BTW as some would say, the "L1 postion" is about 1.5
million km in front of the earth and a location where a satellite can be
parked to give warnings of impending plasma impacts. Some years ago
there was an ISEE satellite out there but it got assigned "comet duty"
and vacated that location.
Anyway, in case nobody told you, ham radio, DXing and the like are but
one small part of Space Science. Don't forget that; it's important!
