Bill,
I fail to see what is degenerating about recent comments except that
they seem to multiply the amount of commercial junk e-mail spams to my
address.
This reflector was premised on Top-Band activities in general and has
dwindled to contest and Dx'ing interests (in moderation).
The degeneration which you speak of must be what is happening to Amateur
Radio in general. We who are trustfully known as a "fraternity", seem
only represent our own self interests.
Our Low Bands have not been attacked because they are perceived by
industry and government to be somewhat obsolete and worthless. (limited
in bandwidth, S/N ratio, and by propagation) Presently low band Amateur
radio gets about as much attention as it deserves. I would certainly
hate to see long term retalitory actions by the commission and congress
because a relatively small group of selfish Amateurs who can't seem to
fathom the world does not revolve around them. Ham radio is a financial
"pain in the Ass" for the FCC which is grossly underfunded.
The following theoretical example is typical of many frequency
management actions in Washington.
(Example: Sell all the HF Amateur frequencies to the highest bidder
experienced in the area. <ARRL> Authorize them to collect usage fees to
administer those frequency bands. Make due a payable to the general fund
50% of these usage fees)
It is my contention that further subdividing any of our frequency bands
by mode or class of license unless fully utilized is a gross mistake.
(Excepting satellite subbands)
I truely do not wish to promote a negative image of Amateur Radio or
Top-Band for that matter. However, if the image of Amateur radio itself
as perceived by others is negative there would not be much myself as an
individual could do to change that.
As I sit and type this post the results of Bill's data collection have
come in. And the Answer is.....
Sincerely,
Bob Kile, KG7D
