Hi all,
As I have seen a couple of queries about the location
of TEMUTO, here's some detailed info on the islands.
In fact, as already mentioned in W4ZV's "FLASH", Temuto
is the eastern most province (formerly called Santa Cruz
Islands) of the Solomon Islands.
The islands of Temuto have a total land surface of only
836 square km, but are scattered over 200,000 square km
of ocean. Population is approx. 15,500, mostly occupying
the larger islands.
Islands (or island groups), part of Temuto :
Nendo (also called Santa Cruz, Ndeni, Nitendi or Ndende)
is the largest island >> 10.42 S / 165.50 E
Malo (NE) and Nibanga (SE) are close (about 1km) to Nendo.
About 40km north of Nendo lies Tinakula >> 10.28 S / 165.40 E
Utupua ( 11.20 S / 166.30 E ) lies about 75km to the SE of Nendo.
While Vanikolo ( 11.42 S / 166.50 E ) is about 32km away from
Utupua further to the SE.
Reef Islands >>> 10.21 S / 166.17 E
(also known as Swallow or Matema Islands)
lie about 80km north of Nendo. The principal islands in the
main group are : Nifiloli, Fenualoa, Ngalo, Ngawa, Ngandeli,
Grimbanga Temoa, Grimbanga Nende and Matema.
The smaller ones are called : Ngatendo and Pigeon.
Numa Miombilou or Great Reef is one contineous shoal
which extends to about 25km west of Nifiloli. About 10km
south of this shoal there are 4 small reefs called :
Malani, Malim, Manuwa and Matumbi.
Referred to as the outer islands are :
Nalongo and Nupani ( 10.11 S / 165.32 E ) are about
75km NW of the main group, while Nukapu is
about 35km to the NW. Makalom and Pileni are
respectively 17 and 9 km to the NW. Another distant
shoal is Patteson Shoal at about 100km to the NW.
Duff Islands >> 9.53 S / 167.08 E
(also known as Wilson Islands) consist of :
- Taumako with Tahua and Tohua close by
- Bass Islands : Lua, Kaa and Loreva
- Treasurer's Islands : Tuleki, Te Aku, Lakao and Ulaka
- Hallie Jackson Reef
Tikopia, Anuta and Fatutaka are separate small islands.
Tikopia ( 12.10 S / 168.50 E ) lies at about 380km SE
of Nendo, while Anuta ( 11.35 S / 169.51 E ) is at about
500km east of Nendo. Fatutaka ( 11.55 S / 170.12 E )
is inhabited and lies about 60km SE of Anuta.
Good luck in getting H40AA in the log !!!
