As an old hidden antenna experimenter over many years, I have used wire down
to #40, with lengths up to 500' . A word of caution: birds seem not to be
able to see and therefore avoid wire smaller than about #32. Sooner or
later, a collision occurs and down comes the antenna. Fortunately, #28 to
#32 is relatively invisible unless the sun hits it just right.
