The experience with the DX signals vs the BC signals may be only further
proof that the DX signal is not coming on the direct path that you think it
is. Angle of arrival also plays a significant factor. You might want to
try experimenting with a variable phasing system when listening to DX. I
did a number of experiments with phased listening antennas a few years
back. Over a roughly 1000 Mile north/ south path I found that the optimal
phasing for a given station changed quite rapidly sometimes over a period
of only a few minutes particularly during the "transition period" during
the hour after sunset as the F layers change.
