4W/K7BV DXpedition Update - August 10, 2000
Plans for the early October 2000 DXpedition to East Timor by Dennis K7BV took
some major steps forward recently. Dick N6FF has firmed up his commitment to
come along and bring his 160 meter TX and low noise RX antenna expertise and
eagerness to work the long hard hot humid hours to make the trip a success.
The trip now is receiving welcome strong local support from Thor 4W6MM and
Ross 4W6UN. Several key details regarding bringing in equipment, housing,
power concerns and one or two very delicate political considerations have
been worked out. Unfortunately a change was required and Made YB9BV will not
be accompanying Dennis and Dick which will increase the operator work load.
Thor has opened the door for the use of some 140 foot towers near is house.
The towers will provide excellent support for a number of low band antennas.
The new East Timor Amateur Radio Association and Thor will generously provide
rigs for the DXpedition. Ross has offered a back-up rig. Dennis and Dick
will, in turn, proudly introduce the new callsign for the club (most likely
4W6DX) during their trip.
Ross VK1UN/VK8UN/4W6UN and 4U1ET, Border Service Controller for East Timor
(customs, immigration, quarantine) will probably be able to meet the
operators to smooth things over upon their arrival.
The situation in-country remains tense and sporadic border violence has
occured. Dennis and Dick have been determined the risk so be acceptable at
this time. Ross and Thor will continue to update the operators of any change
in the situation.
