I have gone to the trouble of measuring the change in impedence and resonant
frequency of a dipole as it is lowered in .1 wave increments from a half
wave high, down to laying on the ground, and then immersed in 1", 1', and 3'
of pond water... Compared to flat on the ground immersion in the water
causes only minor changes... What you did by stretching the wire across the
river -which added only a percent or two of absorption -  was to suspend the
antenna over a ravine, electrically raising the antenna away from ground...
