For an insulated (series-fed) vertical, keep in mind that the connection
from the shield of the coax to the radials should be as short as
possible. This probably means that the "optimum" distance should be as
small as possible.
If the vertical is grounded (i.e., shunt-fed), several conductive paths
should be made at approximately equal intervals from the vertical to the
radial ring, with the coax shield connected to the base of the vertical
with as short a connection as possible.
