G'day
Long-time low-banders may remember Hughie Lloyd, VK5BC, who I recently
learned became a silent key during late April.
Hughie lived in the South Australian riverland, on the former transmitting
site of the medium wave station 5RM. For many years, Hughie was a radio
engineer at 5RM and lived with his family on-site. When the station
closed, Hughie took over the transmitting masts and put together an amazing
antenna system for the ham bands.
I only knew Hughie through occasional contacts, but he was terrific
operator and a great bloke, operating on everything from 160 through HF to
VHF. The bands will be the poorer for his absence.
