Hello,
With all the talk about installing chokes, I built one yesterday with 50 feet
of RG8 flex wraped around (single turn)
a 4 inch PVC pipe (total about 15 inches).
Installed it last night...
One question(?) Do I have to suspend the choke off the ground or is OK lying
next to my vertical?

For the air-wound balun on my 160m vertical,
I used a plastic laundry detergent tub. It
is slightly tapered, so each turn is slightly
different from the next, but nothing significant.
I wound mine with RG58 and spaced the turns one
conductor diameter apart. That's about 1/4 inch
spacing. I think I must have around 12 turns or
so on the tub. I hold each turn in place with black
plastic tie wraps. It works very well, so far as I
can tell. Totally cheap too :-) It should work ok
with larger size coax as well, since the bending
radius is fairly large.
