Jon Based on what I've read, plus my own experiments with 160m antennas, I think you are correct. The readings are suspicious. You should see a narrowing of the bandwidth with an improved ground plane with more and longer radials. This would remove some of the ground loss resistance, lower the feed point impedance, and raise the SWR. A matching transformer would take you back to 50 ohms for a good match.
