I was under the impression that the termination transformers
were to match the characteristic impedance of the lines (688
ohms) with the characteristic impedance of the individual
lines over ground. ON4UN suggests this to be in the
neighborhood of 340 ohms. So he recommends a termination
transformer that matches 688 to 340.>>>>
That's the problem.
You should have paralleled both conductors at each end and
measured. The Beverage feeds the combination of both
conductors in parallel against the push-pull impedance.
Counting ground resistance you measured over 500 ohms, which
is reasonable for a single wire.
