Fred, K3ZO forwarded the following which
gives a bit of interesting history about the first
Thailand - USA QSO in 1970.

                                73, Bill W4ZV

Hi Bill:

Tom, N6RA (ex-W6KWE) was over here this weekend and got me to replace
an HS5ABD QSL confirming the first-ever Thailand-USA contact on 160
meters. This was during the CQWW 160 Meter Contest in January, 1970,
when I prevailed upon the rector of Thailand's Northern Technical
College to allow me to use the tower of the college's broadcast
station, which was on 1600 KHz, during that contest. Tom had lost the
original QSL.

Rector Swath Tscheikuna (HS3NT) was very accommodating and shut the
station down for two full days and provided me with space near the
tower to set up my Drake Line and operate the contest, and transferred
the coax going to the tower to my Drake line (which was later donated
to RAST on my departure from Thailand and now resides at the HS0AC
club station as a historical artifact.)

Following Tom's request, with some trepidation I entered the "inner
sanctum", a basement closet where all of my old logs are stored. With
some difficulty I finally located my contest log for that historical
event, and on the odd chance that it might be of interest to 160 meter
historians, I have scanned it and I attach the scan herewith. As you
can see, there was not a lot of action on 160 that could be heard in
Thailand, and my only recollection of the event is that I heard VK5KO
over and over again but "we had already worked."

73, Fred, K3ZO

Stations worked: JA2CLI, JA7AO, VK6NK, JA3UI, W6KWE, VK5KO,
4S8GN/7, JA3AA, JA1RQA, W7RM.
