The ARRL web site has announced the passing of Cliff Buttschardt, K7RR.
Cliff's contributions to AMSAT are mentioned in that article and in
links from it. What is not mentioned, and may be of interest to Top Band
operators, is that Cliff was also one of the participants in the Cuesta
College Radio Club 160 meter operations, on the hill across the highway
from the college. Cliff operated, strung beverage wires, laid out
radials, and fueled the generator in many a 160 meter contest. Callsigns
used by the club included WA6RKE (the club call), W6HDO (Cliff's former
call), W6JU (Mort Brewer), AA6DT and N6KB. If you worked any of these
calls in 160 meter contests in the 90s, there is a good chance it was
Cliff at the key. Cliff also operated the LOWFER beacon, callsign "C",
at the Cuesta College Radio Club site.
