Thanks for the comments and suggestions...found the problem to be my buried 
coax which the gophers seemed to like. It was chewed through to the center 
conductor in several places. This caused the resonant freq to shift upwards 
about 15 khz and the 2:1 swr bandwidth more than doubled from 30khz to 80 khz. 
The swr curve was normal except broader.
