Braum, SM0FLY did the same thing that you are suggesting, with great success.
I visited his QTH a few years back and it involved a mixer down converstion
arrangement with an RF link to the shack. He used his IC756 Pro on 50 MHz as
the tunable IF if I remember correctly.
A good set up, although I don't hear him on Top Band these days.
You might hook up with Braum as he is not far from you.
