Two years ago, I ran a Beverage the way you describe. In my case, it was due 
west, ending about 50 feet short of the line running N/S. It was certainly 
usable, but there was noticable noise re-radiated from the line --  
atmospheric noise, not powerline noise. My installation was almost directly 
in line with a pole having a ground wire and the downlead to my buried 
service. Haven't tried aligning the antenna to end between poles -- I just 
install it farther away.

For comparison, my NW Beverage is very quiet, and it ends about 200 feet 
short of the line.
