Ladies, Gentlemen and others of the radio realm,
The Boring Amateur Radio Club is proud to announce the twelfth
running of The Stew Perry TopBand DX Challenge. This exciting 160M CW event
will grace the band from 1500Z December 29 until 1500Z December 30, 2007.
You can operate any 14 hours out of that time period, but Boring Amateur
Radio Club insiders suggest that operating while it is dark outside will
probably increase the number and distance of the stations that you may
work! The 160M band is funny that way. Go to
http://www.jzap.com/k7rat/stew.html to read the eloquent rules and find a
lot of other interesting stuff.
The Stew Perry TopBand DX Challenge is fun because it uses a distance
mnemonic as part of its scoring procedure. If you work somebody a long way
away, then you get more points for that contact than you would for working
somebody closer. We use Maidenhead Grid squares as part of the contest
exchange so the other station can know how far they've worked. Imagine that-
a contest exchange that really means something! It's simple and fun-just
send your call sign and grid and get the same in return and you have a Q! Do
that a bunch and you can be a contender.
This avant-garde topband contesting extravaganza is also unique in that
the contesters decide what heroic RF exploits are worthy of commemoration by
a plaque. Each year the Band Backbones donate $50 to The Boring Amateur
Radio Club and specify what condition of worthiness must be scaled to win
one of these splendorous works of art. Just imagine impressing your friends
and confusing your enemies when they see such an art form on the wall above
your operating position. The Stalwarts who have already committed their
heard earned dollars and specified what it takes to win such a plaquing
trophy are listed below:
Call Class
KL7RA Highest number of QSO's
KR2Q Golden log (highest # of Q's with no busts)
W7TMT Top Score, Low Power, First time Entry
TF3KX Aurora Borealis Plaque ( operating QTH must be within
33,333km of grid square FQ49-(magnetic north pole))
KB7Q Top Score QRP
VK6VZ Top Score with antenna in space < 20mX10m(wins Royal
Flying Doctors of Australia cap rather than plaque)

You can join this list of notable operators by emailing me with a
suggestion for a plaque. If it passes the decency committee of The Boring
Amateur Radio Club then you simply send in a check and your class is set out
for the combatants to do battle over. Your call, as the donor, is also
proudly etched on the plaque that the winner will have the spotlights on at
their operating wall of fame.
There will be periodic updates as the list and creativity of the plaque
award program advances toward the starting gun for this year's edition of
The Stew Perry TopBand DX Challenge. There is time for you Morse challenged
contesters to get heavy with improving your comprehension of the dits and
dahs. 30 minutes a day can get you into the fray. Most years there are
plaques for first or second gear CW operators. Most TopBand combatants
understand QRS and will do that in order to make the Q, so consider making
this part of your yearly contesting crusade.
     See you in The Stew!
    73 and I remain,
    Lew W7EW/W7AT
