Topbander,
let me express my opinion of the FW5RE top band traffic. I used to follow
their operation since, unfortunately till, their 2nd day of 160m operation.
As having already the FW country on the topband confirmed ( by ARRL ) I am
tracing their operation just for fun. I must fully agree with Ageles´s,
SV3RF standpoint. I do hope nobody would impeach my findings because of
fully using my TopBand tolls ( for those of you who would not know : Full
sized dipole 4SQR, low dipole, full size vertical, 400m long Beverages, 8
Circle ).
First of all the FW Dxpediton 160m band signals are into my area very week
due to propagation over north pole area that is true and normal situation. I
was watching their running all the openings but just from European callers
side but I couldn't hear them myself. I personally heard them 3 times just
before FW SR on level of recognize when they start and end traffic and
contour my call. I am not in log but as said above never mind. On the other
hand hordes of EUs where calling all the time and I am sure just blindly. Of
course could be taken exception that OK area is for FW and this moment a
back hole, which could be true. Nevertheless I made a telephone call to
several stations to ask politely how they are listening to FW and answer was
I do not listen to anything but calling because " there was a possibility to
get into the log ". I was also advised to use SDR5000 where you can see on
the water fall DX station which is not readable " normal way " and then
harmonize calling with waterfall marks. And then you maybe appear in the
log. I tested this practice on my new SDR5000 and it could work. Please I
don't want to say this way is good or not. I want to express my personal
opinion because I am going to " celebrate" my 45 years owning my personal
licence and spending 45 years on the 160m band in April 2009.
Topband operators behaviour seems to me is not about cognition the band,
building better and better Topband hardware ( this time antennas mainly )
and operation skill, it is just hunting for new DXCC country at any rate.
I am considering if this situation is not signal for me to find another
hobby.
