Just FYI. Many of you knew "Big Gun" Mike, W5UC who was on this reflector,
asked an occasional question or provided some input from his
experience/perspective.

Hello friends of W5UC

It is with great sadness that I report my very good friend Mike Watson W5UC
is now a silent key. Mike suffered a major stroke on Sunday January
12thand passed away on Tuesday January 14
th. He would have been only 75 on January 20th. I first met Mike on the
radio on this day 40 years ago on 2M CW when he lived in northwest
Arkansas. I soon realized that CW was his passion as Mike was also quite an
accomplished HF DXer. Mike had an impressive total of 364 DXCC entities
worked and is listed on the ARRL DXCC Honor Roll. Mike only needed Eritrea
(E3) to have all the active countries worked.

Mike grew up in Baytown, Texas where he was first licensed as KN5MWH in
1957. Mike upgraded to Amateur Extra in 1963. When Mike upgraded his call
to W5UC, his wife Kathy of over 30 years obtained his K5MWH call. While
living in Arkansas, Mike operated a lot on 2M SSB/CW and was only 2 states
away from WAS when an out of state job changed his plans. After moving to
North Texas he was also very active on 432, 1296, 2304 and 3456 and made
one of the first VUCCs on 3456 MHz.

About 20 years ago, Mike and Kathy moved to Lufkin, Texas. Mike was very
active in chasing HF and 6M DX. He always enjoyed a good CW pileup.

Mike was a great friend and I will miss him dearly.

May you rest in peace Mike
