Both outages were reported on local (DC) news yesterday as having been
caused by utility equipment failure. The root cause of the equipment
failure wasn't disclosed.

This is intriguing. Was the sun responsible for both of those outages?
I can believe it might have been the case in NYC, but I think that SF might
be too far south to be affected by that.
I didn't see anything in the news about those outages being caused by the
sun, but you never know.
I'm just trying to learn something here. :-)
