Smaller gauge wire is just as good electrically, because most of the 
resistance is coupled from the earth below, so wire resistance doesn't 
matter. The only good reasons for using larger wire are 1) that you can 
buy it cheaper and 2) larger gauge holds up better mechanically. I've 
seen advice that #18 is a good compromise for the mechanical issue, but 
may be more difficult to find cheap.
