And only the half-element on the same side as the Gamma rod need be
adjusted (shortened) to produce a match to 50- or 75-ohm co-ax.  The only
possible "disadvantage" would be mental, i.e., getting used to looking at
a lop-sided driven element.

Why use a balun at all?  The Gamma is already an unbalanced device and
may be fed directly with co-ax.
