I can recall some of those old CQ/QST stories but not always what the xyl
told recently.
One story was about a magical matching device that would "seek out Zo".
It was a box with two connectors. The input connector was wired to a 50 ohm
resistor inside the box. You would connect your antenna feedline to the
output
connector, which had no connections inside the box. You would get a perfect
match every time -of course this was really qrp!
Another story was about how to wake up in the middle of the night for a
schedule without waking up the xyl from an alarm clock. The professor showed
a graph of how much water to drink before going to bed versus the amount of
time needed before the schedule. At my age there might be a few flaws in
this theory!
Some old stories were not humorous but were interesting nevertheless. Like
someone said the Geeves covers and cartoons were great. I started back with
the Hugo Gernsback covers, with drawings of hams smiling at the signals they
were getting with their old receivers. One of those led me to build a one
tube (type 30)
receiver, coil on an oatmeal box, tuning capacitor (condenser) from pieces of
tin can, etc. This got me started at age 12 and into ham radio soon
afterwards. I learned the code by sitting and listening and listening until
it finally sank in. The breakthrough was when I could tell a V from an H.
