One additional note on the rebuilding of the kt34xa.  KLM has a new paste for
assembly of the antenna.  The old paste was a copper based grease which
didnt work all that well.  THeir new paste is an aluminum based paste.  It 
is gray in color and should help continunity at all joints.  Definitely use
this new paste. 
    

I also modified the joints where the stainless steel screws go thru the 
fiberglass insulator rods.  I eliminated the inside locking nut and lock 
washer and put the straps in direct contact with the element, providing a 
larger surface area for contact. 

Good luck and hang in there.  Its worth the effort to do it right.
