I have always installed them with the nylon insert facing away from the union.
The purpose of the nylon is to prevent the nut from turning on it's own. I
would be very concerned that the ridge that holds the nylon in place (and stops
the nut from turning) would be destroyed if you turned it in toward the union
and crushed it. The other side (non-nylon) of the nut has a normal face and
can easily tolerate the pressures associated with tightening the nut down
(clamping pressure).

I've not used Nylock nuts before but they have been supplied with my new
antennas for element assembly. Which side of the nut goes down on the bolt
first? Is the nylon insert supposed to be "up" toward the outside of the
union or "down" against the surface of the element.

I've been told both ways. What's the vote?

Thanks,
