There is a specific compound sold in pressurized cans for this purpose,
Synco Chemical Corp."Cable Cleaner Fiber Optic-CATV" (SCC-15-16A).  The
company is located in Bohemia, NY.  The product is sold through companies
serving the telephone and cable TV industries, such as Anixter.

Or, if you don't smoke, and promise to do it outdoors, Coleman Fuel
("white gas") will clean self-sealing cable goop.
