Mike, I wouldn't chuck the consensus on the strength of one installation
that was probably done by a well informed operator (you, I assume) who
attended to slope, crowning, sealing and perhaps other considerations
relating to a particular situation in an area where the risk was known.
Further, there are over 50 RG8 types out there, and a few of them are
actually impermeable to moisture penetration, and most all of the top
quality types would survive 5 years in a high moisture environment. Some
of them are rated for 10 to 15 years, however, and have never been
designed for immersion for such a term.
Your post could be most dangerous for less informed technicians who, like
some of the CATV installers we see, work with no technical knowledge
beyond, "hey, it looks like rubber so water will never never hurt it."
For the amateur community that I know and love, I would continue to
counsel based on tech specs and years of experience.
