In discussing BX-style towers, no information is useful unless it
specifies which sections of BX is involved. That is, BX comes in eight
different eight-foot sections, named BX-1 thru BX-8, with one being the
smallest in diameter. A tower made of BX-1 to BX-6 is much weaker than a
tower made of BX-3 to BX-8 ( the latter being called HDBX-48, the
strongest version sold as a package).
This variation has caused much confusion in judging BX-style towers not
helped by the fact that CQ Contest published a photo of "BX" that was
vastly in error-- showing cross braces rather different than the Rohn
factory BX I have in my yard now. An error nor corrected in later issues,
I might add.
I am not trying to say this is the best tower made for ham use, just that
it should be looked at with all the facts in hand. K4VUD
