HI Joe,
The FCC and/or the FAA has a booklet that you can get for free,describing
in detail the regulations governing antenna structures near airports. I
do not have it with me now, but it is free, and can probably be obtained
with an inquiry over the internet to the FAA. We, at N6IJ were
contemplating large towers at our site, which is just beyond the critical
10,000 foot radius from the airport runways. The regulations set two
different slopes radiating away from the airport runways, depending on the
length of the runway, with a break point of about 3500 ft runway length.
Runways longer than that set a more severe (shallower) slope spec, that
cannot be penetrated by fixed objects (towers, etc). If you want to/have
to build an antenna exceeding the height dictated by the slope spec, then
life gets more complicated.....The first complication is the tower must be
painted, and lighted to the spec written by the FAA. Either white strobe
lights, or
red blinkers. The light system becomes part of the landscape of record
for the people who fly, and is marked on navigation charts. The now
important, wrt flight safety, Antenna Light system, reqires the
owner to be able to
detect any failure of the lighting system, with a requirement to notify
the FAA, within a relatively short time of any failure. There are
commercial control/monitoring systems which automatically monitor and
notify of fault conditions of the light system, but my bet is that such
monitoring gear would substantially increase the cost of a tower system.
