I just saw an article on CNN yesterday, where hurricane
researchers were quite surprised to see an unexpectedly
high wind gradient in the first few hundred feet above
ground level. They found this gradient by dropping GPS
receivers into the storms, and mapping velocity vs.
height. Perhaps the standards will soon be rewritten
to incorporate this data.
