The Polygon guy rod some of us have been using as an alternative to
Phillystran is shipped in an 8' coil by truck, not UPS. It is considerably
more inconvenient, must be uncoiled when it arrives, etc., but is also less
expensive than Phillystran.

If the N4ZR message you refer to is the one I'm thinking of (because I
didn't note who it was from)....that is...someone mentioned utility company
type (short) guy rods. I've seen these locally in lengths from a foot or
two up to 20' or so. I have these on three of four guy levels on my 160'
10M tower, just because I had them in the shed and thought I'd put them into
service, thinking they might serve some torque arm purpose. They're over an
inch in diameter, compared to the typical quarter or 3/8"
Polygon/Phillystran type diameter. They're something totally different than
Polygon or Phillystran. All the guys on that tower are, in fact, used (I
think military surplus originally) Phillystran. I got them off the K6XE
tower in Maryland...the tower became N3RR's ringrotator-loaded main tower,
the Phillystran stayed with me.

I'm told the utility pole insulator rods are not rated/recommended whatsover
for other than axial (in-line) loads. If you're already using
non-conducting guys, I don't think they "buy" you anything. Their
mechanical effect may just as well be negative as positive, I think. 73 -
Rich, KE3Q
