Hi Chuck:
There are two proven methods (that I know of) for soldering those
things outdoors.
1) a small torch or butan powered iron works fairly well, although
you will probably have to shield it from the wind somewhat.
2) a high-wattage (100 +) iron with a *large* flat tip for effective
heat transfer. Guns are essentially useless for this, as they don't
have enough surface that actually touches the work to heat it up.
Also, make sure you have some solder between the tip of the iron
and the work. A molten ball of solder between the iron and the
connector
will *dramatically* increase the amount of heat transferred to the
work..
