The study I remember from Wayne Overbeck was the one he did
in the early 70's when he finally accumulated enough monies for
a second tower. He left his original 37 foot support with a two
element quad in place, duplicated the quad & put it on a new
crankup that he set to 74 feet, exactly twice the height of the
old quad. He paid attention to details, new identical feedlines,
etc, to remove as many variables as possible.
The end result was that over a period of many months and hundreds
of QSO's on 10/15/20, most people could not tell the difference from the
low antenna at 1KW, and the high antenna at 100 watts...he was using
a Collins S-Line with the 30L-1.
After 40 years of hamming, you finally realize that getting the beam 20
or 30
feet above the neighborhood "clutter level" (telephone poles, trees etc)
makes
a tremendous difference, but when you are young, moving every year or
two,
and stuck on city lots, you just don't want to believe it!
Ed, W3EKT.
