Here's a trick I use to improve the stability / rigidity
of my side mounted beams / dipoles (D3W etc.)

First, I place a 6 inch length of 1 inch (inside diameter)
thin walled PVC, cut lengthwise, over the tower leg.
This protects the tower leg from abrasion and increases
the tower leg diameter to 1.5 inches.

Second, I drill another 2 holes in the boom to mast plate,
spaced to accept a 1-1/2 inch U-bolt. The mast pattern looks
like this:
        Mast / Leg
                  |
        O | O O
Boom----------------------------------Boom
        O | O O
                  |

The close in holes allow for a more snug fit with 1-1/2 U bolts
and the original holes can still be used for mounting on a 2 in. mast.
