Regarding the value of software:
I used to work for a company that considered their software to be only
an add-on to entice people to buy other things (hardware and other
services). They didn't care in the least that lots of blood, sweat and
creativity went into the software. Of course all hell broke loose if
there were complaints about the software.....
There was never any belief on the part of management that software was
worth squat by itself. Guess how much money was spent on software
development? Guess how much money was spent fixing bad software? Guess
which ended up being larger.
