Hello All,
I'm considering on replacing my present rotator (Ham II) with a heavier
duty model so that I can use a larger, heavier antenna.
The rotor has for the last 20 yrs. been situated atop a 75 ft fold-over
pole with no thrust bearings etc. It has been used to turn an 18 ft boom
tri-band beam.
The information that I've been able to find indicates that the rotor's
capacity is cut in half when it's mounted in such a fashion.
What I'd really like to know is:
1. Is this an accurate assessment? If so, why? Seems to me that the turning
motion of caused by wind would be about the same. I can see where the
lateral force excerted upon the rotor would be much greater, but that force
would depend on the length of the mast. Could it be that the downward force
exerted by the weight of the antenna and boom be a substantial limiting
factor?
2. Any recommendations? First off, let me vigorusly imply too old and fat
to be climbing an ordingary tower. The fold-over pole is balanced and can
be easily tilted over. Also, I could easily shorten it a few feet to
overcome the effect of added weight placed on the end.
3. Type (brand) of rotor? Which rotors could be the most easily serviced?
Availability of parts and service centers would be a major concern.
