Norton AV using virus definitions as of 2/8/99 does detect the happy99 worm
and will eliminate the exe file. You either have to force the scan or reboot
and let NAV do its normal startup scan to detect it if it's lurking as a
downloaded exe file in your browser/mail download area.
A good URL to keep in mind when worrying about viruses you learn of through
email (or rumor) is:
http://www.microtech.doe.gov/assist/
It's the Government's (Dept. of Energy) task force on computer hoaxes, frauds,
etc. They maintain a very current list of viruses that are hoaxes (many of
them are). They also maintain links to all the popular Antivirus
manufacturer's sites. Happy99.exe is real, not exactly a virus, but is known
by the latest versions of virus signature files. Just a reminder to keep your
virus signature files up to date - they change at least monthly and sometimes
more often. Gee there's almost as many guys out there spreading viruses and
virus hoaxes as there are lids qrm'ing E44DX!
