The conventional plastic boom caps always seem to sun rot and fall out long
before the antennas need to come down for servicing. So this time, I used
some large stainless steel hose clamps to hold a patch of aluminum window
screening over the ends of the booms on the KT-34XA and the 40-2CD. The
screening keeps the critters out and seems to break up the resonance of the
booms enough to keep them from singing. This should hopefully last longer
than the plastic.
