Hello TTians,

Recently my curiosity was aroused when a definition of "BIG GUN" was =
proposed by a participant here.

I have only been hamming since 1959 and I have Never really seen a =
Definition of BIG GUN in print. It seems to be a Word Of Mouth (WOM) =
kinda thing. Now QRP appears to be fairly well established at 5 watts =
or less for example. But BIG GUN is not merely QRO is it?

I have heard a Few literal CANNONS on the bands over the years. I =
suppose there are only 20 or less Individuals on 20m for example... 6 =
over 6 over 6 on 250 foot tower with Full Output who might qualify as a =
CANNON. Of course there are Government stations, business stations, =
clubs, and mercenery stations running much much more... but I mean =
Individuals/Amateurs. I mean a station at a ham's personal residence =
for example.

My personal definition of a "Big Gun", on 20m for example, is the =
Received/Perceived signal Strength and Quality into my station over =
time. A Big Gun signal opens the band, closes the band All the time =
with Consistency. A Big Gun station propagates to All points on the =
globe desired defying skip. A Big Gun signal never waffles, never =
wavers. A Big Gun station HEARS All who call Q5 even IF they are only =
S1 report. A Big Gun Transmitted signal is Audio Quality above and =
beyond the limitations of an appliance operator station. A Big Gun =
signal is Often heard on-the-air testing/checking new ways/techniques to =
Improve the received/transmited signal.

For my personal definition, I would also extend this definition to =
propose a "Big Gun" is also a Teacher and a Role Model. I would expect =
the station to be listed on the A-1 Operator Club roster as well as =
having worked All DX on the earth on All modes.

I have worked THIS station... have YOU?

"Of course, this is my personal opinion and I could be wrong."

Please respond to me with YOUR definition of "BIG GUN".
