For broad sweeps, the 'other' soil types are sand and rock. Obviously
there are many gradations of all of them. The A.B.Chance Co. "Encyclopedia of
Anchoring" (573-682-5521) has nine classifications of soil. They have
machines that drill into the soil and perform pull tests so this is obviously
something that is out of the scope of an amateur determination.
My best advice is to (what else?) do what the manufacturer says and if
in doubt, over-engineer where possible.
