Another way I used was a big engine jack. Position the feet over the
hole , dig, wiggle, hoist and repeat. In our old clay environment
water was NOT the way to go. The water/post combo would act as a
piston. You try and pull the post up, you create a small vacuum at
the bottom and it wants to pull the post down. If we had been able to
get a hose down to the bottom of the hole, it might have worked to
push the post out!
As was said in another post -- lots of digging.
The post had deteriorated some at the just at ground level. We had a
few clam shells of heavy pipe welded around it at that point.
Caution: The tower came either galvanized or painted and welding
without burn through is a task.
These guys tend to rust from the inside out.
