I figured it out...

That webhost only allows ONE ftp connection at a time...  if someone is 
there already... you have to wait.  If you use an FTP client, you get 
additional details on error messages.

Someone spoke of cutting and pasting..  probably in the time it took to cut 
and paste, the one user before him disappeared.

I have the schematics, looks easy enough, and I love the detail they go 
into mechanically...

To refurb mine, maybe won't need a trip to Norm's...  I can do it myself if 
it doesn't need parts (just a good bath).
