Absolutely Tom.

At the Fire Dept. I was with, we would always check the rubber on the aerial
ladder rungs.
They were slit but clamped to the rungs with a bar that screwed to the
bottom side of the rungs.
Any evidence of wear that could cause the grip to slip and it was replaced.

You wouldn't believe how many we would replace in a year.
