Chuck,
  Sorry but this Yaesu rotor does in fact use an AC motor and it does have 
a start
capacitor.
  Maybe some of the bigger more heavy duty Yaesu rotors do use DC motors, 
but not
this model.
I still think it's a cabling problem too, but I have replaced the cable 
just yesterday...brand new cable.
I have the connector apart now and it does show a bit of evidence of 
moisture invasion.
In the morning, I am going to hook up the box to the rotor with only about 
a 1 foot pigtail.
  It's nice having an antenna elevator so you can do this fron the deck.
