First, can someone describe the K7LXC 'double lanyard system'
for safety lines? I suspect it may be obvious, but often lengths
are critical, and this may be helpful.
Secondly, I climb, but I like crankup towers. Each type of tower
has attributes which solve particular problems. The important thing
here is NOT to try and convince the other guy of your particular
comfort zone or solution....it's to make sure he sees the safety
issues with HIS OWN SOLUTION.
I hate tower committees and being dependent on other people. So I
favor machines. Crankup poles are aesthetic, if short. Foldover Rohn
45 is effective, in my climate. (I have several fingertips which will
never be the same, the result of climbing steel in November, in Vermont.)
The foldover allows me to bring my beam to roof-working level in 5 minutes,
without risking frostbite.
The point is....be careful, deliberate, conservative, and sure about what
you're doing. This is as true for climbing as it is for mechanically assisted
crankup/foldover systems.
No way I am likely to put a full sized 3 el 40m beam on a crankup tower...
even the biggest of them. For big aluminum, I choose fixed/guyed towers.
For casual stuff....like an LPDA & a vertical on top...foldover is fine.
The reality is....my wires in trees @ 120' usually work better than the
aluminum!
