I found the same problem with the Polyphaser clamps. I also tried the
strips of copper strap and didn't care for the results. I ended up using a
3/4 in ground rod. These are not usually found at Home Depot and such. I
found mine at a local industrial/commercial electrical supply house.
Perfect fit for the Polyphaser clamps. BTW, the 3/4 in rods are 10' not 8'.

I found the same thing happened to me.....so I cut a few strips of that
copper strap, goo'ed it with the copper goo and slid those in the
clamps...you could even wrap a bit of it around the ground rod I'd think to
'fatten' up the ground rod and then clamp it.
