The capacity hats on the 40-2CD do help to shorten the element lengths
slightly. However, I believe their greatest value is improvement in the
overall bandwidth.
I also think if they were out a few inches further than they presently
are,
that the improvement would be even greater. Just a gut feeling.
Furthermore, increasing the spacing between the ends of each coil and the
tubing would probably increase efficiency (lower coil loss). However, all
things are tradeoffs!
